Name and Pronouns

Lived/chosen names are names people choose for themselves that feel more reflective of their identity. Legal names are also known as dead names, because people should no longer be addressed as such.

Legal Name Change

The process of changing your legal name and/or gender varies based on your state.

Once you have legally changed your name, you can update your legal name with Middlebury.

To do this, email the registrar at registrar@middlebury.edu stating you have changed your legal name and provide the court order documentation of your name change.

This should change your legal name in all places where it is used; however, places you may have to update your legal name individually are as follows:

  • Nelnet and Student Financial Services

If you receive an invoice still containing your deadname:

    • Email financialaid@middlebury.edu and include the following
    • State that you have already changed your legal name with the registrar
    • Clearly state your new legal name
    • Provide documentation such as a court order or New ID showing the legal change

  • Graduation and Diploma
    • Prior to graduation, you will be prompted to fill out your information, including the name to be called at graduation. This does not have to be your legal name.
However, your legal name will be on your diploma.

    • You can request a new diploma following any legal name change.
To do so, create an account with Parchment and order a replacement diploma through their platform. The charge for ordering a replacement is $45 and includes both a secure digital copy and a printed diploma.

Contacting Professors

Socially, transitioning can be an emotional process and is different for everyone.

Often, the first step is changing your name and pronouns. Informing others of this change in an academic setting is completely up to you.

Firstly, your chosen name, if you have updated it in Banner, will be the name your professor has on their roster. There is no need to contact new professors.

Some students let their name change speak for itself and come out to people as needed. However, emails can be useful, especially for students who do not change their names, in explaining your social transition to professors who knew you pre-transition.

First day of class it is customary for professors to have students introduce themselves to the class. These introductions have begun to include pronouns as well. This is an easy way to inform your peers and professor in a casual way. If pronouns are not part of the template given for introductions, you can add your pronouns to your introduction as well.

A good guide for emailing your professors can be found here.

More diploma information is available here, and the registrar can be contacted with any questions.
