An Evening with Singer/Composer Moira Smiley
From her home base in Bristol, Vermont, Singer/Composer Moira Smiley travels the world creating new works for voices and accompanying her performances with her banjo, accordion, piano, and percussive movement. Her recordings feature spare, vocally-driven collections of warped traditional songs and original polyphony.
A vocal polyglot, Smiley’s voice and compositions have been featured in TED conferences, on BBC Radio and TV, NPR, ABC Australia, and live at countless venues from Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall to Walt Disney Concert Hall and Royal Festival Hall. When she’s not leading her own vocal group, moira smiley & VOCO, Moira tours and records with pop artist, Tune-Yards; Irish super-group, SOLAS; The Lomax and Folklife Projects; and Billy Childs’ Grammy Award winning “Laura Nyro Re-Imagined”. Moira premiered her solo album ‘Unzip The Horizon’ at the prestigious Savannah Music Festival in 2018, and published its companion choral Songbook in 2019. In February 2021 she released the vocal album, In Our Voices.

The Elizabeth Drew Memorial Lecture
A conversation with Bakari Sellers, moderated by Bread Loaf faculty member Doug Jones.
Bakari Sellers made history in 2006 when, at just 22 years old, he defeated a 26-year incumbent State Representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the nation. In 2014 Sellers won the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor.
Sellers earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College, where he served as student body president, and his law degree from the University of South Carolina. He has followed in the footsteps of his father, civil rights leader Dr. Cleveland Sellers, in his commitment to public service while championing policies to address issues ranging from education and poverty to preventing domestic violence and childhood obesity.

Shakespeare’s Pericles: a reading by the Bread Loaf Acting Ensemble
A virtual reading by the Bread Loaf Acting Ensemble of the second half of Shakespeare’s play. Pirates, prostitutes, saints and sinners, gods and goddesses, miracles, parents reunited with children, and the dead returning to life. A play about regeneration, forgiveness, and the healing power of time.

Kronos Quartet
Join the Kronos Quartet in a new film composed and directed by Nicole Lizée, and participate in a Q&A with the artists following the show. Nicole’s new work, ZonelyHearts, was inspired by 1960s television programs. Kronos Quartet “exists to create, perform, and promote music from a global perspective that responds to the world we share and expands the understanding of music’s role as a powerful force in society”. In honor of Bread Loaf’s Centennial, this film and live talkback is free and open to the public.
