Faculty seeking funding to hire summer research assistants can apply for support by February 1, 2026 by completing an online application in MiddApply.

Eligibility

  • Applications for funding must be submitted by the faculty member.
  • Positions need to follow the Summer Research Assistant Policies.
  • UR funding only supports continuing Middlebury undergraduates
  • If you do not yet have a student identified, you may still apply.

Funding Evaluation Criteria

We allocate funding based on the following guidelines:

  • The merits of the proposed project
  • Whether the faculty member already has adequate external funding
  • Untenured tenure-track faculty are prioritized in funding decisions
  • Number of Research Assistants funded:
    • Faculty without existing SRA funding - typically, faculty without existing SRA funding will be funded 1- 2 SRA positions (or full-time funding equivalent).
    • Faculty with existing funding - will likely be limited to 1 Undergraduate Research funded SRA position (or full-time funding equivalent).

Note: You may apply for funding for more SRAs than these limits, but depending on the demand, we may not be able to support full SRA funding requests.

How to Apply

Faculty members must submit the online application for each project in MiddApply.

Note: If you have previously been a recommender in MiddApply, you may need to add yourself as an “applicant.” Once you log in, select “My Account” under your name in the upper right corner, scroll down to the bottom and select “Become an Applicant”, then “Save.”

To complete the application, you will need:

  • A brief project description including details about the student’s role in the project and faculty supervision
  • Requested funding amount and budget if applicable
  • Information about total number of SRAs you plan to hire and other funding sources
  • Estimated dates of research and weekly hours

UR’s funding is primarily for student wages, with a limited additional amount for project-related supplies or travel for STEM projects. Summer 2026 rates will be announced in January. The 2025 student research assistant pay rate was $586 per week for a 40-hour work week, prorated at $14.65 per hour.

Faculty with other sources of funding (e.g. external grants, start-up funds, endowed chair funds) are expected to use those funds first to support SRA positions before applying for Undergraduate Research funds.
