Hire an SRA
Faculty hiring a student summer research assistant (SRA) must complete an SRA Hiring Form for each student they wish to hire. Deadline: April 1, 2026.
Faculty must have identified a funding source before completing the SRA Hiring Form.
Student Eligibility to be an SRA
SRAs must be current, continuing Middlebury students to be funded by the Undergraduate Research Office.
Graduating Students: Faculty who wish to hire a student who is graduating need to work directly with HR to set up a temporary staff position and have funds to support this (UR funds are not available to graduating students). Note – these individuals are not eligible for summer campus housing.
Non-Middlebury Students: Faculty who wish to hire non-Middlebury students must follow this process (linked doc pending).
Volunteers: Students who are not compensated through Middlebury College for work with facultyare considered volunteers, even if these students receive stipends directly from a grant or other source not administered by Middlebury. Summer volunteers without external funding are strongly discouraged. Faculty must contact the Undergraduate Research Office for volunteer approval prior to any agreements with students or other institutions. Faculty must also submit a volunteer form. Housing will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Faculty Mentor Expectations
Research positions are considered mentored educational training. SRA positions are typically 20-40 hours/week and typically last 4-10 weeks. Because the nature of some research necessitates extended and/or unusual hours, mentored faculty-student collaborative research positions will need to clearly communicate expectations and monitor hours appropriately.
Please see Tips for a Positive Mentor Experience.
Work Location
Research may take place on and off campus, or a mix of both, depending on the project. Please discuss with us any significant off-campus portions of research. Work locations outside Vermont may impact how we pay SRAs and/or their compensation rate. Please include this location information on the SRA Hiring Form. This may impact your SRA wage budget and limit the hours your student works.
For Research Involving Travel
Please review the Global Committee’s information traveling with or sponsoring students abroad and Middlebury’s handbook travel policies. Students are not eligible for travel advances.
