Emeritus Policy (rev. June 2018)

Emeriti and the College

The designation “emeritus” or “emerita” is awarded by the President and Board to retired faculty who have met certain service criteria. The policy below is designed to help faculty emeriti maintain a strong relationship with the college, and to encourage their continued involvement in its academic life and intellectual community.

1. Emeriti teaching

  • At the request of a Department or Program, and with approval of the VPAA, emeriti may be on occasion invited to teach, normally no more than one course each year.  Such courses must be approved by the VPAA on an individual basis, and will be contingent on substantive departmental needs.
  • Emeriti who, on the recommendation of the department chair or program director, wish to supervise a senior thesis or other senior work are encouraged to do so.  Such arrangements shall be approved by the VPAA.  An emeritus thesis advisor will receive a stipend of $500 for advising a thesis.  Departments and Programs are also encouraged to draw on emeriti as second readers for theses (without remuneration), when a student might wish it.

2. Research Support

  • Emeriti whose current research would benefit from a carrel at the Library may apply to the VPAA for such study space, if available.  In the assignment of these carrels, priority will be given to active members of the faculty on academic leave. Emeriti, like active faculty, will be asked to describe the specific research project they are pursuing.  The College may, if possible, offer offices to emeriti faculty.  The assignment of office space will take place on a yearly basis.
  • Emeriti may make modest use, at the College’s expense, of the department and library photocopy machines for work related to their scholarship.  A special account will be established against which all such usage by emeriti will be charged.  Emeriti who wish to avail themselves of this convenience should notify the office of the VPAA so that necessary arrangements can be made.
  • Research Grants.  The Dean for Faculty Development and Research can award modest grants to subsidize emeriti research.  These grants include funds for projects that foster student/emeriti collaboration, such as funds for a student assistant.  They will also be given for research projects that will result in publication or opportunities to lecture on campus.  Two to three such grants may be made in any given year, depending on funds available.

3. Amenities

  • Emeriti faculty continue to enjoy access to the College computer network and email facilities and technical support on issues related to that access. They also have access to library services and resources (such as ILL). Emeriti faculty may, with administrative approval, be permitted to keep their primary college computer upon retirement; those computers then become personal possessions.  Emeriti faculty interested in retaining their computer should make a formal request to the DFDR.  Emeriti faculty should be aware, however, that our software licenses restrict access to active employees, and therefore the software on those computers will thus need to be removed at the time of retirement.  The college will not provide technical support to emeriti faculty for hardware or software issues on personally owned computers—including those that were formerly college computers.
  • Emeriti faculty, along with retired staff and faculty, are invited to eat lunch at the Grille on Thursdays at the College’s expense (up to $10).  The College will cover the cost of lunch for emeriti faculty only.  In the interest of keeping this benefit affordable, this opportunity does not extend to family members or guests.
  • Emeriti will receive an ID card that identifies them as emeritus/emerita faculty.  This ID card will allow them to use College facilities, receive lunch at the Grille on Thursdays, and attend campus events. The emeritus/emerita designation also facilitates use of the College ID card at other institutions and libraries.
