The Arabic House, Arabesque, and the Muslim Student Association are co-organizing an event to welcome several faculty members of the Middlebury C.V. Starr School in Amman, Jordan. Nour Afaneh, professor of Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Arabic, and Rasha Jalees, professor of Modern Standard Arabic, will join members of the department for brunch at the Arabic house. They will also present on the school in Jordan and life in Amman.

Sandy Tolan reading & discussion from his book, Children of the Stone: The Power of Music in a Hard Land

Award-winning author and journalist Sandy Tolan will be reading from his book Children of the Stone: The Power of Music in a Hard Land.  Children of the Stone tells the dramatic story of Ramzi Aburedwan’s life growing up in an occupied Palestinian refugee camp and his transformation to a talented musician.  Mr. Tolan is touring with Ramzi Aburedwan and his Arabic-French Dal’Ouna Ensemble. (Sept. 21 @ 7:30pm MCFA Concert Hall) Light lunch will be available after the event.  Free

Featured in concert will be the powerful music of Ramzi Aburedwan and his Arabic-French Dal’Ouna Ensemble featuring the Moroccan  singer, Nidal Ibourk, and violinist Michael Dabroski, performing with his violin made by Palestine’s only violin maker, Shehada Shalalda: a dynamic fusion of Palestinian Arab folk, classical, jazz and world music.  Free
