Maggie Brook Sugarworks
Contact: John Elder
John and Rita Elder have a sugaring operation on 142 acres of hilly forestland in the northeast corner of Starksboro. Their lime-rich soil supports a mixed northern hardwoods forest of oak, beech, basswood, hemlock, and pine as well as of sugar maples and red maples. The Elders’ goal in acquiring this woodlot was to participate in the traditional Vermont practice of sugaring while also protecting the forest ecosystem, sustainably harvesting forest products, and providing ways for family to stay connected to the land.
