In Memoriam: Ted Perry

Ted Perry

Ted Perry, Fletcher Professor of the Arts Emeritus, initiated film studies at Middlebury College in 1978 and began the film-video program in the Department of Theater, Dance and Film-Video.  He worked tirelessly to expand our faculty, develop our curriculum and expand our resources.  He raised the funds to endow the Hirschfield International Film Series.  He took a leadership role in planning and designing the Film and Media Culture Department facilities in the Axinn Center.  He was instrumental in the founding of the Film and Media Studies Department at Middlebury College in 2008.  Professor Perry taught courses on avant-garde film, American film, film and modernism in the arts and individual directors, such as Federico Fillini and Michelangelo Antonioni.  His publications include a memoir My Reel Story, a collection of essays on modernist films, Masterpieces of Modernist Cinema, and an article on psychoanalytic aspects of three films, “Impersonation of the True Self.”  We recognize and applaud his accomplishment in developing this vital field of study at Middlebury College.
