Each year the French Department honors an outstanding graduating senior with the Stephen A. Freeman Prize.  The award was established in 2002 with proceeds from the Stephen A. Freeman fund, a generous gift from Jerry and Carol Waldorf Lohr '58 to support undergraduate instruction in French.

Dr. Freeman joined the faculty at Middlebury in 1925 as a Professor of French and Dean of the French Language School.  While serving Middlebury for 45 years, he held many administrative and academic appointments, including that of interim president three times.  In addition it was he who established our first school abroad in Paris.
