In teaching a first-year seminar, faculty are expected to provide students with the opportunity to fulfill the four general learning goals of the course. Otherwise, faculty have complete freedom to teach the seminar as they see fit.

Course Proposal

If you are scheduled to teach a first-year seminar in the near future and you plan to teach a new or substantially revised seminar, you will need to fill out a brief course proposal form. Please use the form linked here. If you have any questions about proposing a new FYS, please contact Amy Morsman

Once submitted, your proposal will go directly to the Curriculum Committee for review.
All new seminar proposal forms should be submitted by February 20, 2024.

Canvas Site

If you are a current FYS instructor, resources in support of teaching, writing, advising, etc., are available to you on the Canvas site for current FYS instructors

If you are anticipating teaching an FYS in an upcoming semester and would like to browse ahead of time the training materials on the Canvas site, please email Amy Morsman at amorsman@middlebury.edu for access to the site.
