Curatorial Studies Opportunities

Students have opportunities to craft their study in art history to serve particular interests in museum and gallery work. Course opportunities include Art Museum Theory and Practice, topical seminars utilizing or designing exhibitions in the Museum of Art, and independent study and senior thesis projects involving objects in the college collections.

The Museum offers internships in its educational, registrar’s, and curatorial departments and a Museum Assistants’ program (MAP) that trains students to assist with school tours, public programs, and special events. Off-campus opportunities include museum and auction house internships, the senior majors’ annual trip with behind-the-scenes visits to museums and galleries, and museum experiences through study abroad.

Study Abroad

Middlebury’s programs of study abroad offer rich opportunities for students interested in the museum and gallery world. There they can benefit from course offerings on the art of the host country, often working in and experiencing first hand the treasures and interpretive and exhibition techniques of the world’s great museums.  Many discover there the topics that they will pursue in senior thesis work. Others take advantage of internships arranged through the programs abroad in museums, art galleries, and archives.
