Art History

In stone, paint, metal, or on paper, artworks relay information in both content and form. Art history endeavors to understand the material, social, and critical perspectives found in the physical manifestations of art objects.

Through courses across a wide continuum of times and cultures, students of art history not only learn to articulate histories of visual production, but also to think critically about the stakes of artistic creation and objects of culture more generally.

Art History students work closely with the art collections at the Middlebury College Museum of Art and other museums in the region such as the Shelburne Museum.
