From the earliest days of civilization, architecture has enabled humans to create spaces that express their deepest beliefs about their lives.

The architectural studies track combines the study of the history and theory of architecture with a rigorous sequence of studio courses in architectural design taught by practicing architects. Additional perspectives come from renowned architects in the Cameron Visiting Architect Program. While some students pursue architectural studies as a rewarding liberal arts major, for others it serves as a preprofessional path to an architectural career.

Habitat for Humanity

Through a partnership with the Addison County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Middlebury College architectural studies students have been able to participate in a class that focuses on the design of highly energy-efficient homes for Habitat families in our community.

Designing for Real

Design Assembly

The Design Assembly brings together a team of students and architects for eight intensive days to live off the grid while designing and building a project for a community. Past Design Assembly projects have taken place on islands in Penobscot Bay, Maine, and in the mountains of Goshen, Vermont.

The program is open to students from all colleges and universities, and no experience with design or construction is necessary. Student participants experience a real-world project, hands-on learning, and a professional externship with our firm. In 2017, the American Institute of Architects New England Region bestowed an award for Excellence in Architecture on the Island Design Assembly projects completed over the previous five years, and the program was one of 16 international case studies featured in the book The Design Build Studio: Crafting Meaningful Work in Architecture Education.
