All IP&E students must take a minimum of five courses in each discipline, regardless of credits earned at the secondary school level.

For Political Science, a score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement exam in comparative politics will entitle the student to exemption from PSCI 0103.

For students who matriculate in Fall 2023 or later, a score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement exam in comparative politics will count for general credit only, but will not count towards the major. Students will need to take PSCI 0103 at Middlebury College regardless of their AP status.

For Economics, students who have scored a 5 on the Advanced Placement exam in microeconomics receive credit for Introductory Microeconomics (ECON 0155); students who have scored a 5 on the Advanced Placement exam in macroeconomics receive credit for Introductory Macroeconomics (ECON 0150).

Students who have scored a 5 on both the microeconomics and macroeconomics Advanced Placement exams, or who have earned a score of 6 or higher on IB economics or a grade of B or better on A-level economics receive credit for both Introductory Microeconomics (ECON 0155) and Introductory Macroeconomics (ECON 0150). These students must still take 5 Economics courses while at Middlebury.

Students who have taken the Advanced Placement, IB, or A-level exam in statistics must still take an economic statistics course as part of the requirements to fulfill the IP&E major. They may take ECON 0111, provided they are not seeking course credit for AP, IB or A-level statistics, or ECON 0211 to fulfill this requirement.
