Middlebury’s International Studies Program prepares students for a world requiring a global perspective.
International studies enables students to develop a deep, interdisciplinary understanding of a specific geographic region and its place in the world. Students gain advanced language competency together with grounding in other liberal arts disciplines, broad historical and cultural knowledge of their region of focus, and an expansive world view.
The program draws faculty from departments and programs across the College and offers seven areas of specialization: African Studies, East Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle East Studies, Russian and East European Studies, South Asian Studies.
What is International Studies?
Launched in 1996, International Studies is today one of the most popular majors at Middlebury College. The major takes advantage of the College’s historic and renowned strengths in foreign language education and area studies coverage. Contributing faculty are active, well-known scholars and dedicated, experienced teachers.
Students majoring in International Studies attain:
- deep knowledge of and broad exposure to a region of the world;
- advanced competency in a foreign language;
- familiarity with an academic discipline of their choice.
The results are cosmopolitan and informed graduates who are well prepared for the business world, the nonprofit sector, and graduate school.
