Italian Department Learning Goals for the Major

Upon completion of an Italian major, students will:

  1. possess advanced linguistic proficiency in Italian in speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing;
  2. have completed at least one (preferably 2-9) full-immersion course in an Italian university;
  3. have completed a research project in Italian;
  4. be familiar with contemporary Italian culture, including literature, cinema, history from 1940-present, political structure, geography, and major contemporary Italian issues (southern question, immigration, etc.);
  5. be able to analyze literary texts in Italian, including the appropriate use of literary terms;
  6. have studied of at least one major late-medieval and/or Renaissance literary text.
