Alison Maggart ('08) was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. At the age of five, she began playing the harp, and at the age of twelve she began composing her own music. In 2008, she graduated from Middlebury with high honors in the music department, while concurrently being enrolled in the pre-medical program. For the past two years, she has been working in Chennai, India, where she teaches Western music history, theory, and harp in the first Western music school in India, KM Music Conservatory; in India, she also has had the opportunity to transcribe, arrange, and orchestrate songs for film-score composer, A.R. Rahman. Her latest transcriptions have included music from both the Slumdog Millionaire and Couples Retreat soundtracks. Currently, she is in the process of applying to Ph.D. programs in historical musicology, which she hopes will allow her to pursue interests in substructure and symmetry in (especially, atonal) composition.
