I had a hard time figuring out the admissions process as an international student, but luckily had the opportunity to visit Middlebury once before applying. That one visit was the only chance that I got to understand how the school worked. I want to make as big an impression on someone else’s decision as that visit made on mine.

I did political research about a 1970s resistance movement in the Açores islands thanks to a Mellon grant.

Hugely overwhelming, especially because I was doing everything from abroad without much opportunity to explore the schools in person. I did know quite a bit about Middlebury, because my sister was studying there at the time of my application, but I was completely in the dark as to the American application system.

Biggest challenge in transitioning to college

 The work load, and making my own schedule.

Greatest surprise or least expected aspect of life at Middlebury

 There are so many more activities and amazing speakers than I’d expected, and people are involved in tons of niche projects and organizations.

Choosing a major

I knew from the time I came to Middlebury what my major would be; it was something that had always interested me, something I like to hear talks about in my free time, and the first subject that I would pick up a book on for leisure reading.

Favorite Class or professor

Modern Art with Hoving, it opened my eyes to everything that was under the surface of a piece of art and made me completely rethink all of my trips to European art museums.

Favorite Vermont-based activity

Eating goat cheese from a farmer’s market.

Favorite winter activities

Skiing and then sipping hot chocolate to warm up.

Favorite spot off campus

 Flatbread restaurant

Favorite dining hall concoction : Sunday brunch lemon scones

Run the TAM on a snowy morning.

I have a greater appreciation for the diversity of academic interests, and I’m a harder worker. I also am more likely to try something that I might fail at, because I think being humbled is worthwhile.
