In the trading pits and board rooms of London's financial district, the City, playwright Caryl Churchill finds the precise pitch of the arena of arbitrage, inside trading, greenmail, corporate raiding and leveraged buyouts. "Sexy greed is the late '80's," and Serious Money is an acidly funny arrow to the present.... Directed by Cheryl Faraone. Paul Lewis, piano

Beloved British pianist Paul Lewis’s study of late works of Schubert is already garnering as much praise and attention as his highly acclaimed Beethoven cycle. “Faced with such excellence a mere critic can only abandon paper and pencil and listen to this heroic but deeply moving young artist with awe and amazement”—Gramophone. In this penultimate Schubert program at Middlebury, Lewis delights us with the German Dances, Piano Sonatas nos. 14 and 16 (both in A Minor), and the Allegretto in C Minor. Lewis' latest recording of Schubert's late piano works was named Gramophone magazine's "Recording of the Month" in the February 2012 issue: "Following his Beethoven immersion on record, Paul Lewis returns to Schubert, some of whose sonatas he set down a decade or so ago for Harmonia Mundi, a project left tantalisingly hanging in the air. Vermont Honors Choir Festival Concert

Fifty students from grades six through nine from Beeman Elementary, Weybridge Elementary, Mt. Abraham and Vergennes Union Jr High/High School, Charlotte Central School, Hinesburg Community School, and other schools across the state present a lively and inspiring program. Guest conductor Micheal Sanflippo from the Newark NJ Boys Chorus School. Tickets: $8 adults; $6 students; $20 family maximum at the door.

Shifting the Frame: Dance for the Camera Screening

Shifting the frame from the stage to the screen, choreography students investigate how movement and video intersect. Facilitated by Artist in Residence Tiffany Rhynard, the students present their short movies choreographed specifically for the camera. Come dressed for a Hollywood movie premiere and join us on the red carpet (literally!) for the Middlebury Dance Program’s first “dance for the camera screening.” Awards will be given for best overall film, and audience members can win for best costume. African Music and Dance Ensemble

The African Music and Dance Ensemble, directed by Professor Damascus Kafumbe, performs in an end-of-year concert featuring a wide range of East African instrumental, vocal, and dance repertoire. The Titan Project: Prometheus

A bold theatrical reinterpretation of the myth of the fire-bearing creator of humanity.  Set in a gritty future ravaged by warfare and disease, the play launches the Titan Prometheus out of the mythical, and into the realm of dark science fiction.  In a bleak world with no allies, Prometheus struggles against the warring factions as well as the demons of his own past in order to find and save his long-lost love. Middlebury College Community Chorus

A choral concert for Mother’s Day, with a delightful mix of contemporary, traditional, and classical works. This large chorus, with a history dating back more than 150 years, brings singers together from on and off campus and throughout the Champlain Valley. The program includes choruses from Come, Ye Sons of Art written in 1694 by Henry Purcell for Queen Mary's birthday, as well as Franz Joseph Haydn's delightful setting of Te Deum, written in 1800 at the request of Empress Marie Therese of Austria. The chorus will present several newly composed works, including René Clausen's Prayer, based on writings of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, an inspiring version of Ubi caritas by Norwegian-born composer Ola Gjeilo. New arrangements of classic poems and texts include: Morning has Broken by British composer Bob Chilcott; a Welsh lullaby (Suo Gan) by K. Lee Scott; Afternoon on a Hill (Edna St. Vincent Millay) by Eric Barnum; The Moon is Distant from the Sea (Emily Dickinson) by New Zealand native David N. Childs; and Omnia Sol (Let Your Heart Be Staid) by Z. Randall Stroope, that incorporates lyrics from the medieval song, Carmina Burana. The concert concludes with two songs by Vermont composers about Vermont: Nathaniel Lew's arrangement of These Green Mountains by Diane Martin; and My Vermont, a chorale for voices and piano by Rutland composer-teacher-conductor Daniel Graves. The Gale Force Winds

The Gale Force Winds present their final concert, a culmination of a semester's hard work. The program includes a wide variety of woodwind quintet music-- a tour of time and space.  Pieces preformed will include music from the 1700s through the present, from classical to Latin Jazz to modern music of the American West.  The quintet members are Catherine Hayes '12, flute; Sam Beguin '13, clarinet; Amanda Kaminsky '13, clarinet, Kelsey Calhoun '12; bassoon, and Suzanne Calhoun '14, horn. Screened and Selected II: Contemporary Photography and Video Acquisitions 2006–2011

Middlebury College Museum of Art, Christian A. Johnson Memorial Gallery

This exhibition celebrates the collaboration between the museum and donor Marianne Boesky ’89, who initiated a multiyear project through which Middlebury College students selected works of art for the museum’s permanent collection. The many works acquired with these funds span the past four decades and include art by Gregory Crewdson, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Idris Khan, Sally Mann, Robert Mapplethorpe, and James Welling, among others. Free.
