The Good Woman of Setzuan

In this parable for the theatre by Bertolt Brecht, three gods come to Earth in search of one good person. They find her in Shen Te, a prostitute. With money from the gods she tries to lead a decent life, but in order to survive, she must impersonate her heartless "cousin." Musical direction by Carol Christensen; directed by Cheryl Faraone. Dartmouth Gospel Choir:

A Haiti and Vermont Food Pantry Benefit Concert

5:00 P.M., Mead Memorial Chapel
The Dartmouth Gospel Choir, a 50-person ensemble with 10 live musicians, will enrich the Middlebury Campus with an hour of uplifting sensational sound. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the Vermont Food Pantry and for Haiti relief efforts. Enjoy Mediterranean delights and beverages at the post-concert reception in Carr Hall. Presented by PRAYZ and PALANA. The Sound Investment Jazz Ensemble

Big-band swing, upbeat bebop, classic jazz tunes, and contemporary grooves make this concert a sure bet to set toes tapping. Double Vision: Spring Dance Concert

This fascinating evening of new work from the spring choreography class blends technology and dance. The students’ investigations focus on the interaction between choreography and video, facilitated by Artist in Residence Tiffany Rhynard. Airswimming

Play by Charlotte Jones; senior work of Martina Bonolis '10 (acting) and Michaela Lieberman '10 (acting). Lyrical, charming, and unsentimental, Airswimming tells the story of two women, simultaneously liberated and bound by their imaginations.  Together, and with the help of Doris Day, they navigate the troubling realities of womanhood and its duality as boon and affliction. My Ohio: A World Premiere Musical Comedy

Middlebury playwriting professor Dana Yeaton '79 and L.A. composer Andy Mitton '01 have combined forces with Vermont Stage Company to premiere their red state, blue state musical comedy, My Ohio. When Bonnie, an evangelical Kindergarten teacher, slips across the road for a quick fix from her usual bone-cruncher, she finds instead Neil, a gay, atheist, and recent transplant from New York City.  His new age chiropractic leaves her feeling "Born Again Again," but all that health and exuberance sends Bonnie into a tailspin. Sworn to saving, and resisting, each other, these fundamental opposites find themselves locked in a culture war will either change or defeat them both. Choreography by former Middlebury dance instructor Peter Schmitz, and costumes by Catherine Vigne '07. Sponsored by the Middlebury Department of Theatre and Dance. Summer Days and Nightingales: Susanne Peck, soprano and
Cynthia Huard, piano

Affiliate Artists Susanne Peck and Cynthia Huard perform a beautiful concert together. Their program includes a variety of songs by Brahms, Debussy, Berg, Ives, Gershwin, and Coward. Peck's career encompasses the roles of conductor, singer, and educator. An acclaimed soprano, she has sung and recorded with many leading ensembles, including the Boston Early Music Festival, The New York Collegium, and the Concert Royal Baroque Opera Company. Huard has appeared in recital as a pianist and harpsichordist throughout the United States and in Europe. Her versatile musicianship is a key element of the summer concert series of the Rochester Chamber Music Society, where as artistic director she performs with internationally known artists. A world premiere film presented in conjunction with the stage production presented earlier this semester. Adapted from R.L. Stevenson's classic novel, and set in an alternate steampunk version of the year 1916, Jekyll is the Senior work of Ross Bell '10 (directing) & Ben Schiffer '10 (sound design); Independent work of Ryan Bates '11 (set design.) Starring Christo Grabowski '12, Lilli Stein '11, Charles Giardina '12, and Noah Berman '13. Designed by Ryan Bates '11 (set), Carlie Crawford '11 (costumes), Heather Pynne '11 (lighting) and Ben Schiffer '10.5 (sound). Written and Directed by Ross Bell '10 as histheatre/film joint thesis project. Special bonus: the screening is preceded by the short film Remember When We Used to Play, the thesis work of Nikhil Ramburn '10.  Free
