Churchill Franklin graduated from Middlebury in 1971 as an American Literature major. He began his career at Bank of Boston (now part of Bank of America) as a commercial loan officer and then went on to become assistant treasurer of Thermo Electron Corp. now Thermo Fisher Scientific, a fortune 500 company, where he managed all aspects of the treasury function.

In 1986 Churchill co-founded Acadian Asset Management LLC. Acadian is a $100 billion in assets under management, quantitative institutional asset management firm with offices in Boston, London, Sydney, Singapore and Tokyo. He assumed the role of chief executive officer in 2013, Chairman in 2017, and retired in 2020.   In 2022 Churchill became the Executive Board Chair of Intech Investments LLC.  As an investor and a leader, Churchill has facilitated the successful transition of Intech from a subsidiary of a public company to a highly functioning asset management firm poised for a turnaround in growth.

Churchill is an emeritus trustee of Middlebury College, having joined the board of trustees in 1989. He served as an active board member from 1989 until 2004 as a Charter Trustee and Chair of the Board from 2000 until 2004. He is still a member of the investment committee of the college’s $1.6 billion endowment. As an emeritus trustee, he is an active non-voting board member of the Middlebury Institute at Monterey. In May 2008 he and his wife Janet received Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Middlebury College. 

Churchill also sits on the Boston Advisory Board of The Posse Foundation, sits on the board of the Whitehead Institute, a Cambridge based bio-medical research Institute, and serves on the investment committee for the Whitehead ‘s $800 million endowment. Churchill has been a guest lecturer at UVA, Georgetown, and Middlebury. 

 As a student, Churchill was starting inside linebacker on the Middlebury football team for three years while the team went from 2-6 to 8-0 under then coach John Anderson. In 1972, Churchill married Janet Halstead, Middlebury class of 1972, an American history major. Janet’s mother, Virginia Halstead, was Middlebury class of 1943.  Their three children Chip ‘02, Katie ‘05.5, and Lindsey ‘07 all graduated from Middlebury, and Chip’s wife, Hannah Ritchie was also class of ‘02. 

Churchill and Janet now live at Bread Loaf View Farm in Cornwall Vermont  He is currently leading the task force for the College Snow Bowl, acting as an advisor to the Porter Hospital development staff, and serving on the board of the Town Hall Theater.
