The Middlebury Center for Social Entrepreneurship supports and teaches young social entrepreneurs to use the tools and strategies of entrepreneurs to bring about positive social change.
The center will help guide and inform much of the design- and project-based work that Middlebury students pursue locally and around the world. But its mandate goes beyond the College; its goal is to provide opportunities for young people across the country to improve lives around the world and address some of this century’s greatest social challenges.
Our Benefactor
The center was established thanks to the generosity of Alan Hassenfeld and The Hassenfeld Family Foundation. Hassenfeld, the former CEO at Hasbro Inc., has been a leader in corporate philanthropy over the long course of his business career.
The Programs
The center is structured around three interrelated programs:
- a lecture series,
- project grants,
- and training.

Grants for Lasting Solutions
The MCSE eventually expects to award about 300 grants each year, to high-school students, college students, and recent college graduates. Those grants will range in size from $200 to $500 for high-school students up to $10,000 for recent college graduates. In its first year, the MCSE will award about 10 grants to recent college graduates to showcase the kinds of projects it will be seeking in the future.
Training Workshops
Aspiring social entrepreneurs, including grant applicants and recipients, will be invited to attend training workshops at Middlebury’s campuses and on partner campuses. The first training workshop is planned for June 2012 at Middlebury College.
