Midterm elections have a huge impact on Congress. This is an opportunity to join the nonprofit efforts of Vote Forward to get out the vote. Vote Forward supports voting in underrepresented communities, is nonpartisan, and has a proven record of boosting voter turnout.

    Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lecture: Thinking about Migration through Latinx Art

    A lecture by Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Professor Charlene Villaseñor Black, Professor of Art History and Chicana/o Studies Studies at UCLA. Professor Charlene Villaseñor Black will offer a public lecture on the relationship between migration and art. In introducing the lecture, Charlene Villaseñor Black writes: Can art effect political change, and if so, how? Can it move us to action, empathy, andhope? I consider these questions as I investigate Chicanx (Mexican American) artists’ responses to global migration, in particular, Los Angeles artist Sandy Rodriguez (born1975).

  • Reading and Lecture by Moriel Rothman-Zecher from "Before All The World"

    Moriel Rothman-Zecher reads from his new novel, Before All the World (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), which follows two Yiddish-speaking immigrants from a fictional shtetl in Northeastern Ukraine, to Philadelphia of the 1930s, where they connect to a Black, communist writer, and the three of them try to navigate America’s racial and sexual politics, alone and together.

  • Documentary Viewing: Writing With Fire

    Amnesty International will be screening the documentary titled, “Writing With Fire,”  The documentary description captures the ideas of censorship and freedom of speech: in a cluttered news landscape dominated by men, emerges India’s only newspaper run by Dalit women. Chief Reporter Meera and her journalists break traditions, redefining what it means to be powerful.

    Each week will provide something new and different according to students’ requests - including making art and learning calligraphy; Mystical topics of spells, amulets, and witchcraft in ancient Judaism and contemporary Israel; watching Israeli films and shows; graffiti in Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem; listening to Israeli music; meeting interesting people from various sectors of Israel; and cooking and eating lots of Israeli foods.
