Davis Family Library: 8am - 11pm
Armstrong Science Library: 10am - 10pm
Library Response to COVID-19

Last Updated: August 26, 2020

With a mixture of confidence that we have established a good plan for how to safely open our libraries, a hint of trepidation as we embark into this uncharted territory, and excitement at being able to welcome students back to the library and some return to normalcy, here is the current plan for how the libraries will operate this fall.

  • Hours
    • The Davis Family Library will open to College ID-holders at 8am on Tuesday, September 8
      • During the first two weeks, we will only be open Monday through Thursday from 8 am – 6 pm, from 8am – 5pm on Fridays, and closed on weekends.
      • We will expand hours once the two weeks are over, assuming that all is going well and everyone is following guidelines for physical distancing and wearing of face coverings.
    • Armstrong Library will open at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 8, and will only be accessible to students enrolled in classes taking place in BiHall or in classes taught by departments housed in BiHall.
    • Special Collections and Archives will be open by appointment only beginning on Tuesday, September 8. Email specialcollections@middlebury.edu to visit.
    • We will closely monitor adherence to the requirements of physical distancing and the wearing of face coverings, and reserve the right to reduce hours and/or close the library should these rules not be adhered to.
  • Circulation Services
    • Circulation of books and DVDs will be available via a paging service, where materials are requested through MIDCAT and retrieved from the Davis Family Library vestibule.
    • During Phase One and Two, the stacks will be closed.
    • We will circulate some easy-to-clean equipment including laptops, LCD projectors, projection screens, tripods, Bluetooth speakers, USB DVD drives, and iPads.
    • Returns are to be made via the book drop in the vestibule and the back of the Davis Family Library, and at Armstrong Library,
    • In Phase Three, we will offer opportunities to schedule sessions to browse the stacks.
  • Seating
    • Per State of Vermont regulations, and in order to ensure appropriate physical distancing, we are removing 50% of the seating in both Davis Family Library and Armstrong Library.
    • Please do not move chairs. They are all positioned in accordance with state regulations regarding physical distancing.
    • Group study rooms will be single-occupancy, and can be booked online when classes begin.
    • We have put in place a reservation system that will allow students to book space to study in the library and will make it available should it be necessary.
  • Carrels
    • Per State of Vermont regulations, and in order to ensure appropriate physical distancing, we will be reducing by 50% the number of carrels available.
    • In order to maximize use of the limited number of carrels, we are for this fall discontinuing the practice of providing dedicated carrels for thesis writers.
  • Reserves
    • All course reserves will be available online. There will be no print reserves.
  • Support for research
  • Printing
    • Printing will be available in both Davis Family Library and Armstrong Library, with modified procedures to ensure appropriate physical distancing and proper cleaning.
  • Computers
    • There will be a limited number of computers available for library use. Students are encouraged to use their own laptops.
  • Interlibrary Loan
    • Interlibrary loan will operate as usual, except that materials will be retrieved via the vestibule in the Davis Family Library
  • Food
    • Because face coverings are required at all times, we are not allowing food in the library. The Wilson Cafe will resume operation during Phase Three.

  • Returning Books to the Library:
    • If you have books to return to us – either from Middlebury’s collection or borrowed from another library via Interlibrary Loan – please return them to the book drop in the back of the building at 110 Storrs Ave.  If you have library equipment checked out from the library that you need to return, please email library_circulation@middlebury.edu to schedule a time to drop it off.  Please do not return equipment in the drop box.  If you are away from campus, and need to return library items by mail, please ship to this address:
