Through a commitment to immersive learning, we prepare students to lead engaged, consequential, and creative lives, contribute to their communities, and address the world’s most challenging problems.

Library Mission and Vision

We are Middlebury’s scholarly heart, advancing teaching, learning, research, and creativity.

We foster intellectual engagement and critical inquiry by connecting our community to the universe of information;  teaching how to conduct research in a complex information environment; curating scholarly and unique collections for the needs of current and future generations; and offering welcoming spaces for study, collaboration, and contemplation. We do this to prepare our students to lead engaged, consequential, and creative lives, contribute to their communities, and address the world’s most challenging problems.
 

Library Values

People First
We invest in ourselves and each other, encouraging learning and growth. We treat each other with trust, respect, and kindness. While respecting boundaries and privacy, we cultivate community among library staff. We make and keep commitments, and when we can’t, we renegotiate them in advance. We strive for transparency and inclusivity in our decision making processes.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access
We align our work and our hiring practices with Middlebury’s commitment to DEIA, creating a welcoming environment, understanding and reducing bias, practicing cultural humility, and developing cultural competencies.

Purposeful Innovation and Creative Maintenance
While we regularly seek out innovations and ideas that improve Middlebury and our community, we balance this appetite for trying new things and taking informed risks with a long-term commitment to preservation and sustainability. We understand the importance of maintenance and that “newest” does not necessarily equal “best.”

Curiosity and Self-reflection
We seek to understand our community, their evolving needs and interests, and adapt our services accordingly. When things go poorly, we try to find out why in non-judgemental ways. We learn from and build on our successes. We use data, but don’t believe it tells the whole story of our contributions to Middlebury.

Collaboration
We work together within and across our various workgroups and teams, with campus partners, with regional and national colleagues, and beyond, to do better together what we can’t do as well as individuals.

Privacy and Intellectual Freedom
We protect our patrons’ privacy and are champions of intellectual freedom.
