Streaming Video Requests
Faculty may request streaming video content. There are a variety of ways streaming content is acquired and made available.
Renew online access
If you previously had access to a streaming video and it is no longer working, please contact library staff at dvdacq@middlebury.edu with your course information and film title.
Purchase of digital licenses
Acquisitions staff will attempt to purchase streaming access on institutional platforms or purchase directly from filmmakers. When the library purchases a film with a digital license, there will be an embedded link in the catalog record in Library Search.
To request streaming video:
- See if we have it already by searching the library catalog. The library has access to thousands of documentary films on a variety of platforms.
- If we do not have the film online, search Kanopy and send the request from there. Kanopy can show you films we do not own and send a request directly to us for purchase. Licenses on Kanopy are one or three years, depending on usage.
- If you don’t find a streaming version in Library Search or Kanopy, submit a purchase request
Please include as much information as possible such as:
- course number, date needed
- language, subtitles needed
- link to the film description
- call number if the library owns the physical media (DVD, Blu-Ray)
Transferring physical media to Panopto
If the library is unable to purchase a film on an institutional platform, we will ask Media Services to convert the DVD or Blu-Ray to streaming format. Faculty will be notified when the ticket is created, and can communicate directly with Media Services staff on the timing of their request and any specific needs they may have. Tickets can be viewed at the ITS help desk portal.
Films digitized from the Library’s physical collection are
- password protected
- available only to course members
- available only for the duration of the course
Transferred films can be viewed on Panopto. To share access to previously digitized films, faculty can create a “Panopto Resource” in Course Hub. Once created, the file can be copied and shared with the current semester’s enrolled students. For more information about CourseHub, please see the ITS information on CourseHub.
Copyright considerations
Links to films digitized for courses will not appear in Library Search. Also, the library must own any film we digitize - personal copies can be donated to the main library’s film collection. Acquisitions will acquire a DVD or Blu-Ray whenever possible for this purpose.
