The College will conduct background checks on all new full-time and benefits-eligible part-time faculty and staff. The full policy is available in the Employee Handbook. For faculty, the background check will typically include a verification of educational credentials, a criminal background check, and a social security verification. Candidates will be asked to authorize the background check, as a condition of employment, at the time that an offer is made. The check will be completed by a third-party, in compliance with applicable state and federal laws. The results of the background check will be used only as stated here, will not otherwise be disclosed, and will be destroyed after 12 months.
A positive finding in a background check does not automatically disqualify a candidate for the position. Rather, an important finding will initiate a review by the VPAA/DoF that takes into account the amount of time that has elapsed since the event, the nature and gravity of the finding, and the relevance of the event to the responsibilities of the position in question. The candidate will be given the opportunity to review the report prior to the College taking any adverse action, and will be provided with the name, address, and phone number of the third-party firm that conducts the check. The candidate will also be provided with a written description of his or her rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
