Reviews for Reappointment and Tenure at Middlebury College

Faculty on both regular and term appointments are subject to periodic reviews by either the Promotions Committee or Reappointments Committee.

Faculty in regular (tenure-track) positions usually undergo their First Review in the fall of their third year.  This review is completed by the Reappointments Committee.  The Tenure Review normally takes place in the spring of the seventh year of appointment.  This review is completed by the Promotions Committee.  Procedures and responsibilities for both of these reviews are outlined in the Handbook.

The Promotions Committee also conducts reviews for promotion to full professor.  And the Reappointments Committee handles Ten-year reviews for veteran faculty.

Faculty in term positions undergo a Contract Review if the position they hold has been extended by the Educational Affairs Committee and the relevant department or program wants the incumbent to continue in the position.  The Reappointments Committee is charged with conducting Contract Reviews.  These reviews are generally done during Winter Term, but can be completed in fall or spring.

Each year, the Provost's office provides deadlines for the reviews to take place each year.  The appropriate deadlines are listed below for those undergoing reviews this academic year.  Questions should be directed to the Provost's office.

Fall Reviews

 

September 2 Candidate dossier must be submitted to provost
October 14 Tenured colleagues letters (if requested) due
Outside referee letters (if requested) due
October 24 Department chair/Program director (if 
requested) letters due
November 18 Final day on which candidate may submit additional materials
December 15 Notification of decision

 

Winter Reviews

 

December 12 Candidate dossier must be submitted to provost
January 13 Tenured colleagues letters (if requested) due
January 20 Department chair/Program director (if requested) letter due
February 15 Notification of decision

 

Spring Reviews

 

February 6 Candidate dossier must be submitted to provost
March 12 Tenured colleagues letters (if requested) due
March 23 Department chair/Program director (if requested) letters due
April 20 Final day on which candidate may submit additional materials
May 15 Notification of decision (for reappointment or tenure reviews)
June 1 Ten-year reviews completed
