COVID-19: Essential Information

Family Support

In addition to taking care of our own health and wellness, we are often caretakers for others -- spouses, partners, children, elderly parents, etc.  Middlebury College and our surrounding community offer a variety of support services and programs that recognize the needs of families of employees.

Spousal / Partner Employment Guidelines
In order that Middlebury College continue to be a desirable place to work and live, the College seeks to respond to the challenge of dual-professional couples seeking work in a rural area to the extent it is able by providing informational assistance to spouses and partners who seek employment. In addition to the guidelines found at the above link, Middlebury is developing partnerships both with a network of Vermont higher education institutions and businesses in the Middlebury region to help address this issue.

Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP)
The College's Employee and Family Assistance Plan provides confidential counseling and referral services to reduce stress and improve the quality of life for employees.  The EFAP provides confidential assessment and referral services, and short-term counseling to help you and your household members work through life's challenges.

Faculty Leaves of Absence
This policy covers all nonacademic leaves of absence including medical, parental, and family related issues as noted.

Staff Parental Leave
Benefits-eligible employees with one year of service as a benefits eligible employee are eligible for up to six weeks of paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child.

Family & Medical Leave
This policy is designed to offer assistance by providing job-protected leave to eligible employees for certain family and medical reasons. The leave may be unpaid, paid, or a combination of unpaid and paid depending on the circumstances as specified in this policy.

MiddCard Privileges
MiddCards provide access to athletic facilities, discounts at the College store, library privileges, and discounts at cultural and sporting events. Spouses or domestic partners of benefits-eligible employees are eligible to receive a Spouse/Partner card with the same privileges as the employee card.

Breastfeeding Friendly Employer
We are designated as a breastfeeding friendly employer through the Vermont Department of Health's Women, Infants, and Children Program.  For Middlebury's specific policies, see The Middlebury College Breastfeeding Guidelines

Area Child Care Centers
Faculty and staff new to Middlebury often ask for information about local childcare centers. This page lists several area child-care centers and information about each. Specific questions should be addressed to the individual agency.

Changing Tables
As noted in a focus group from the recent Task Force on the Status of Women, relatively modest improvements in daily life make a difference. One suggested enhancement, for example, are to place changing tables in selected restrooms on campus.  Changing tables are available in the lower level of Kenyon, the Mahaney Center for the Arts, the Grille, McCardell Bicentennial Hall, and the Axinn Center (the latter three as a result of a Work/Life Mini-Grant).

Addison County Parent Child Center
As a member of the Vermont Parent/Child Center Network, the mission of the Addison County Parent/Child Center is to provide support and education to families and assure that our community is one in which all young children get off to the right start with the opportunity to grow up healthy, happy and productive.

Financial Planning & Retirement
Periodic workshops are offered on financial planning and retirement.  These are communicated through e-mails and via the college events calendar.

Elder Care
Resources local to our community include Middlebury Elderly Services, Addison County Home Health and Hospice, and several area Assisted Living Facilities.
