What is ArchivesSpace?

Think library catalog, but for archives and manuscripts, rather than books.

ArchivesSpace is a searchable database for unique, historical items—such as letters, reports, diaries, and photographs. Our collections range in size from a single letter to tens of thousands of pages of College records.

Search ArchivesSpace (go/aspace), or contact special collections to learn more or to schedule a visit.

What will you find in ArchivesSpace? A lot. But for example, listings of hand-written letters by Henry David Thoreau, Civil War soldiers, and Middlebury College Presidents. You will also find College financial records, meeting minutes, reports, memorabilia, photographs, diaries, scrapbooks, sound recordings, and films.

What won't you find in ArchivesSpace? Digital copies of our paper collections. Most of these collections have not been digitized. ArchivesSpace contains inventories and descriptions (also called "finding aids") that help navigate a collection. Our finding aids vary in style and depth of detail, but their common purpose is to describe and enable access to our archival and manuscript collections.
