Production Designer/ PTP/NYC Production, Company and Budget Manager

Position Summary:
The job responsibilities of the Production Designer and PTP/NYC Production, Company & Budget Manager fall under three pillars: Serving as (1) Resident Scenic & Lighting Designer for four or more Theatre productions per year at Wright Theatre and the Seeler Studio Theatre on the Middlebury campus, some of which will transfer to NYC for the PTP professional season (2) Production Manager for PTP/NYC, the NYC-based professional theatre company affiliated with Middlebury College (3) Company Manager and Budget Administrator for PTP/NYC.

The distribution of time devoted to each of these roles will vary according to operational requirements which depend on the time of year. This composite position strongly supports the College's mission both on and off campus, as a designer of the public element of the work of the Theatre Program in Middlebury and in NYC. PTP/NYC provides an active bridge for students of the College to the professional community of theatre makers, and the Production and Company Manager aspects of the role bear direct responsibility for the training and supervision of the students in a major element of their essential tasks.

Essential Functions:
Earliest anticipated start date is October 30, 2019.

Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

  • Designs sets and/or lights for four or more faculty-directed productions during the academic year. Designs are executed by Theatres technical staff under the designers supervision. One or more designs annually will transfer, with appropriate adjustment to a new theatre space, to NYC for the 5 week PTP/NYC summer season.
  • Collaborates in planning and building faculty productions as a scenic and/or lighting designer, including preparing for and supervising technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Assumes responsibility for transfer and execution of designs and all technical elements for two to three shows annually to the NYC theatre space.
  • Trains, manages and supervises technical staff involved in setting up and dismantling of productions, and running same for 5 week season.
  • Establishes and executes meetings, policies, procedures and all items related to liability insurance and fire codes. Collaborates with producing director in establishing operational budget and payroll, estimates federal, state and city taxes, along with workers comp and unemployment insurance.
  • Issues weekly payroll, provides income and expense statements for y/e tax purposes.
  • Submits budget to Banner/Planning budget system and pays all bills through college budget system.
  • Acts as Advisor for the Hepburn Zoo.



General Responsibilities:

  • Shares responsibility for evaluating students enrolled in lab sessions in conjunction with Theatre Programs Set/Lighting Professor, THEA 0119 & 0129.
  • Works with Theatre Programs Set/Lighting Professor to address lecture sections of Production Studio courses, THEA 0119 & 0129.
  • Advises student designers on departmental projects when applicable.
  • Shares responsibility for creating a safe work environment in the Theatre Programs spaces.
  • Coordinates design aspects for KC/ACTF touring when applicable.
  • Performs other duties as requested.



Qualifcation
Education:

MFA in Stage Design required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Professional experience in Scenic and Lighting Design, especially in an academic environment.
  • Professional experience in theatrical Production Management. Familiarity with the Actors Equity Associations LORT D rule book.
  • This position requires working closely with students and requires skills in instructing and supervising.
  • This position requires collaborating with directors, designers, technical staff and students.
  • This position requires the ability to schedule and organize self and others to meet deadlines. This position requires work in evenings and on weekends.
  • This position requires a 6-week residency in New York City during the summer.



Experience:

  • 8-10 years of professional experience in Scenic and Lighting Design.
  • 8-10 years work experience in the production, company and budgetary aspects of the position is required.
