Meet Joanna Lyons ’13

Congratulations on your acceptance to Middlebury! You’ve earned your spot here, and we are so excited to welcome you. Making the final decision in your college process can be difficult, but know that your acceptance letter here represents more than admission to a school—it is an opportunity to join this incredible community, the start to your unique four-year journey.

As a senior at Middlebury, I still remember the stomach-churning excitement and pure joy I felt upon learning that I had been accepted. I knew then that I would love this school for so many reasons—from its small classes and personal connections with professors, to its gorgeous location between the Green and Adirondack Mountains, to the variety of people from all over the world that I would meet. What I could not have predicted at the time, however, was the way my experience here would unfold. I did not know, for example, that I would one day find myself belly dancing in a winter term workshop, testing foods for GMOs in my biology lab, interviewing a Vermont senator while local news editor of the Middlebury Campus, or racing my friends up a mountain in an annual snowshoe competition. These experiences, and so many others, have formed my own Middlebury adventure. What yours will look like is entirely up to you.

One of my favorite things about Middlebury is that everyone’s experience here is unique. While I immersed myself in political science courses to complete my major, my friends dove into organic chemistry and neuroscience classes. When I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, my peers were in Jordan, Kenya, Argentina, and India, to name a few. As I taught Spanish in a local elementary school, others led trips for the Middlebury Mountain Club or volunteered at the soup kitchen in town. The combination of courses and activities possible here is seemingly endless.

No matter what you choose to pursue as a Middlebury student, one thing is certain: you will be part of an incredibly strong community, one in which you will learn, grow, and laugh to an extent you never thought possible. At the end of the day, it is the people here—and the connections you’ll make with them over the course of four years—that make this place so special.

As a newly admitted student, you should be proud of all that you’ve accomplished thus far and excited for the adventure that lies ahead. Welcome to the Middlebury family!

Best wishes,
