Waiting List Information for First-Year Students

Please submit the online form in your application portal to indicate whether or not you would like to remain on the Waiting List.  Your preference must be entered by May 1, 2018.

  • One purpose of the Waiting List is to allow us to maintain the size of the entering class by controlling its maximum enrollment. We are intentionally conservative in making our initial offers of admission so as to avoid matriculating too many students. We anticipate admitting some applicants from the Waiting List each year, although that number can vary considerably. In the past five years, the number of students admitted from the Waiting List has ranged from zero to around 100.
  • The Waiting List is not ranked in any way. All waitlisted students who have indicated that they would like to remain on the waitlist will be considered if we are able to offer admission to any additional candidates.
  • Openings in the class may develop for either fall semester or spring semester.  You may state your semester preference or remove your name from the waitlist by using the online form accessible from your application portal.  A willingness to be considered for both September and February admission may increase the probability of admission.
  • We generally fill any vacant positions in the class between early May and mid‑June. Prior to the first week in May, we have no way of knowing whether or not there will be any openings. You will be notified by email when we are unable to admit additional students from the Waiting List.
  • Should you wish, you may send a personal letter with updated information for your file, and/or have your most recent grades sent to the Admissions Office. Personal interviews in the Admissions Office are not available.
  • Please note that candidates offered admission from the waitlist are not eligible to defer their enrollment.

  • If you decide to remain on our Waiting List, please be sure to protect your place elsewhere by placing a deposit with another college or university prior to May 1. In the event that Middlebury is able to offer you a place in the first-year class, you should be prepared to forfeit your deposit elsewhere.
