Gap Year Description:
I spent my gap year in Sevilla, Spain living with a Spanish family, taking Spanish classes, and volunteering at an after-school program at an elementary school. What began as an endeavor to learn Spanish turned into a much more rewarding experience, one that I could never have anticipated. Sevilla quickly became my second home in the world. I know I will keep in touch with my Spanish family and friends for a long time.
How it influenced your time at Middlebury:
From traveling around Europe and to Morocco, to signing up for flamenco dancing lessons, to experiencing Sevilla’s spring festivals, my gap year gave me so many opportunities I never would have gotten had I gone straight to college. For the first time in my life, I also had free time to dedicate to myself; I entered my freshman year here at Middlebury a more mature and independent person. Having mastered Spanish, I was able to start learning Chinese here, and hope to study abroad in China during my junior year. I also hope to live abroad for a couple of years after college. I would recommend a gap year to anyone; you never know how a simple decision to defer a year from college could change your life.
