Middlebury is highly selective, with admissions decisions based on high school records, standardized test scores, recommendations, extracurricular involvement, and student writing. Most students rank in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, challenge themselves with difficult courses, and demonstrate commitment to interests beyond academics.

Middlebury selects students for admission who show the potential and desire to succeed in a rigorous academic environment. For that reason, whether they come from small-town America, a big city, the suburbs, or from outside the U.S., Middlebury students find that they have much in common.

The College follows a need-blind admission policy for domestic students, which means that a student's financial status does not influence the admission decision. In the case of international students, Middlebury follows a need-blind admissions policy to the extent that financial resources allow.  Middlebury makes every effort to all help candidates obtain the financial aid they need in the form of grants, loans, and work/study jobs.

The Middlebury application consists of Middlebury's Pre-Application Supplement and the Common Application, both of which may be filed online. All first-year applicants must also submit a photocopy of a graded analytical or critical essay and complete an additional essay, part of the Pre-Application Supplement.

To demonstrate special abilities in the arts, writing, athletics, etc., supplemental materials are welcomed as part of your application. Art portfolios should be presented as slides mounted in clear plastic slide holders; tapes, CD's and videos should clearly identify the instrument or role being played.

Interviews are not required but we strongly encourage a campus visit. Campus tours and group sessions are offered on a regular basis.

Early Decision may be elected by students for whom Middlebury is a clear first choice. Early Decision candidates must enroll if admitted, and enjoy no statistical advantage in gaining admissions over students applying for a regular decision.

Middlebury does not require a specific secondary school program of study, but we suggest:

  • Four years of English
  • Four years of one foreign language
  • Four years of mathematics and/or computer science
  • Three or more years of laboratory science
  • Three or more years of history
  • Some study of music, art or drama
