Recommended Courses
Middlebury does not require specific secondary school courses, but the following program of study is suggested:

  • Four Years of English
  • Four years of one foreign language (preferred to two years of two languages)
  • Four years of mathematics and/or computer science
  • Three or more years of laboratory sciences
  • Three or more years of history
  • Some study of music, dance, art or drama

Standardized Tests

Candidates must submit standardized tests and may select from a menu of three different test options.  The requirement may be met by submitting either the ACT; or the SAT I; or three SAT II exams in different areas of study.

Students applying for the 2010-2011 academic year may use the College Board’s Score Choice option. This option allows applicants to have only their highest section scores, across all SAT dates, submitted to us; it reflects the belief we have practiced for decades—that students should be free to present their own best case in all aspects of their application. Middlebury has always used a candidate’s highest section scores, and we will continue to do so even if a student does not elect the Score Choice option.

By accepting the Score Choice feature, Middlebury hopes to lessen some of the anxiety that surrounds the entire college admissions process, and we hope to help students understand that test scores are not the defining element in our decisions. This option also underscores the fact that the individual student owns his or her test scores and is entitled to direct their usage, just as we believe that each candidate has the independence and responsibility to choose how to make his or her best case for admission. This belief is reflected in our longstanding policy of accepting additional portfolios; music, academic, or creative projects; and all other types of submissions that represent an applicant’s finest academic, extracurricular, or personal accomplishments.

Middlebury’s Admissions Office is aware that a range of factors can affect test scores, including socioeconomic background, test preparation, schooling, and financial and educational resources. We also recognize research that suggests score increases are typically negligible after two rounds of tests, and that many students will not be in a position to take multiple tests. We will continue to keep all of these factors in mind as we review each applicant to Middlebury College.

Please note
that many high schools no longer report tests on their transcripts, so it is the candidate's responsibility to have all tests sent to Middlebury from the appropriate testing service.

    Early Decision Programs

Candidates who have identified Middlebury as their first choice are invited to apply for an Early Decision. ED candidates may be admitted to the Fall Semester or Spring Semester, denied admission or deferred for reconsideration with the Regular Decision applicants.

ED candidates may not apply to other colleges for an Early Decision and must agree to enroll and withdraw applications to other colleges if admitted. Middlebury will withdraw an offer of admission if a student fails to comply with these stipulations.

Results of the October ACT or the November SAT I or II will normally arrive in time to be reviewed for Early Decision 1, and tests taken during December will usually arrive in time to be considered for Early Decision 2. Tests taken in January will not arrive in time to be used for Early Decision 2.

    Application Deadlines

Note: All supplementary materials (as defined above) must be mailed, faxed or e-mailed by November 15 for Early Decision 1 and by January 1 for Regular Decision or Early Decision 2.
