Molière’s “The Imaginary Invalid” Plays April 12-14 at Middlebury College

April 2, 2011

New Production Is Based on the Ensemble Work of Jacques LeCoq

Middlebury, VT—The Middlebury College Department of Theatre and Dance presents The Imaginary Invalid, adapted and directed by Jay Dunn ’00, on April 12-14, 2012. This production of Molière’s last work is an exploration of the French dramatist’s final hours, re-envisioned for the modern stage.

Suffering from tuberculosis, and not far behind his recently deceased wife and infant son, Molière begins writing what will be his final play: The Imaginary Invalid. The life stories of the playwright and his protagonist weave together in an ironic parallel of two realities that crash together in an explosion of dog Latin, disease, love, lazzi, and death.

jaydunn00Director Jay Dunn brings his own experience with the physical theatre and ensemble work of twentieth century French theatre artist Jacques LeCoq to bear on this new production.

A Behind-the-Scenes Lunch and Discussion about The Imaginary Invalid will take place on Tuesday, April 10, at 12:30 P.M., at Wright Memorial Theatre. Dunn will introduce the play and speak about the inspirations for the Middlebury production; members of the cast and crew will share insights on their work. Lunch is provided free of charge for Middlebury College ID card holders; pay-as-you-can community donations are accepted.

Performances of The Imaginary Invalid will take place on Thursday-Saturday, April 12-14, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. each evening, plus a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday only, at Wright Memorial Theatre on the campus of Middlebury College.
