October 29, 2012

Director Cheryl Faraone Sets Shakespeare’s Comedy in World War I Era

Middlebury, VT—The Middlebury College Department of Theatre and Dance continues its fall season with William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, a play of impulsiveness, melancholy, and exile, opening November 15. The action in this new production occurs in the early 20th century, a time when the world tipped over and all was irrevocably changed.

asyoulikeitIn As You Like It, Shakespeare looks at love from multiple perspectives, none entirely unshadowed. The characters ricochet between the jealousies and competitiveness of the court and the eerie, transforming Forest of Arden, where gender is muddled and epiphanies are a regular occurrence. Music will play an important part of the production, with arrangements by Carol Christensen (also the Musical Director for the production) using melodies from the World War I era. Additional live music is provided by Elias Anderson ’12.5 and Terri Conti.
