Saxophonist Zitong (Bruce) Jia ’16 Wins 2013 Beucher Concerto Competition

March 4, 2013

First-Year Student Will Be Featured Soloist in March 15 Concert with the Middlebury College Orchestra

Middlebury, VT—The Middlebury College Department of Music is pleased to announce the winner of the 2013 Beucher Concerto Competition: Zitong (Bruce) Jia ’16. Jia earned the honors by performing Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud on the saxophone. Jia will now go on to perform as soloist with the Middlebury College Orchestra in a public concert on Friday, March 15, 2013, at 8:00 P.M., in the Mahaney Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Jia is a first-year student from Toronto, Canada, and will likely be a biochemistry major at Middlebury. He possesses diverse skills as a musician: he plays saxophone in Middlebury’s Sound Investment Jazz Ensemble and French horn in the Middlebury College Orchestra. His non-academic interests include watching old films and enjoying ice cream and dark chocolate.

Auditions for the Concerto Competition were held in January at the Mahaney Center for the Arts. The field was very strong, and the judges had to deliberate between a large field of talented competitors. Though discussions continued for quite a long time, the eventual decision was unanimous. This year’s judges were David Neiweem, member of the University of Vermont Music Department faculty, vocalist, and choral director; and Hilary Hatch, violinist and violist with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.

The Alan and Joyce Beucher Concerto Competition was established by a gift from Susan Beucher Cady and George L. Cady ’72, P ’08, ’11, in honor of Susan’s parents. Alan and Joyce Beucher both had careers in music: Alan was the Master of Ceremonies for Radio City Music Hall, where he sang and introduced the Rockettes for more than 20,000 performances; and Joyce taught elementary school music and performed choral works on Long Island.
