Contemporary Dance Company Catherine Cabeen–Hyphen Performs at Middlebury October 11 and 12

September 30, 2013

Program Includes Interdisciplinary Works, Live Music, and a World Premiere

Middlebury, VT—Hailed by the New York Timesas “visually exquisite,” Catherine Cabeen–Hyphen is a project based, contemporary dance company dedicated to interdisciplinary collaborations that use the body as an intersection for ideas. The Middlebury College Performing Arts Series will present Catherine Cabeen–Hyphen in performance on October 11 and 12 at the Mahaney Center for the Arts.

Hyphen’s program will feature six dancers and five interdisciplinary collaborators in four contrasting works. First will be Cabeen’s 2010 work Composites, a tour de force solo created in collaboration with award-winning author Jay McAleer and composer Julian Martlew.

The second work will be excerpts from Cabeen’s 2011 evening-length work Into the Void, inspired by visual artist Yves Klein, combining drag performance, precise choreography, and elaborate costumes. The cast of five accomplished dancers for Into the Void includes Bessie Award-winning dancer Germaul Barnes.

Following the intermission, the company dives into their third piece, 5 Windows: On Dance and Oud. Created in 2012, this piece features oud virtuoso Kane Mathis and dancer Kathryn MacLellan in a duet that celebrates the love between artists and their muses. The Seattle Times raved, “…In 5 Windows, she attaches herself to him, balancing against him and all but perching on top of him at times—this, while Mathis dazzles the audience with a virtuoso performance on the oud.” The fourth and final work of the evening will be the world premiere of Break Down, a new work for four female dancers and one electronic musician. The performers will share intimate, embodied journeys that dance between injury and the inspiration that can arise from being broken down.

Hyphen’s Artistic Director, Catherine Cabeen, is a dancer, choreographer, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at Middlebury College. She has received choreographic commissions from companies around the globe, and currently performs in her own work, and with Richard Move. She is a former member of the Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, and was Jones’ Assistant Choreographer on the original production of Spring Awakening at the Atlantic Theater. Cabeen is also a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Pearl Lang Dance Theater. In Seattle, where Cabeen was based from 2006-2012, she performed as a guest artist with Donald Byrd’s Spectrum Dance Theater, and the Chamber Dance Company.

Cabeen and members of Hyphen will offer a free lecture/demonstration entitled “Movement Invention and Collaboration” on Wednesday, October 9 at 12:30 P.M. in the Dance Theatre of the Mahaney Center for the Arts. Patrons are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to enjoy while the company performs excerpts from their upcoming performances and discusses the collaborative process.
