Modigliani String Quartet To Give Free Concert Nov. 16

October 31, 2017

Sunderman Family Fund Supports This Annual “Gift to the Community”

Middlebury, VT—Formed by four close friends in 2003, the acclaimed French ensemble Modigliani String Quartet was named for the famous painter because he “was something really special . . . an artist who had his own style and stayed true to it.” The Modigliani’s November 16 concert program will include Wolfgang Mozart’s Quartet in D Major, K. 575; Claude Debussy’s Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10; and Antonín Dvořák’s “American” Quartet in F Major, Op. 96.

Thanks to generous support from the Sunderman Family Concert Endowment Fund, in memory of Dr. F. William Sunderman Jr. and Dr. Caroyln Reynolds Sunderman, this concert is free; no tickets are required.

Performing Arts Series Director Allison Coyne Carroll first encountered the Modigliani Quartet at a “Sunday Morning Coffee Concert” at Wigmore Hall in London. She immediately recognized the communication between the performers, their attention to fine musical detail, and their connection with the audience. “An excited murmur spread through the hall, and within the first few bars, we all settled in for what we knew would be an exhilarating concert.” She lauds the Sunderman family for allowing the Series to introduce such promising new quartets to our community each season.

About the Quartet

Formed in 2003, the “Quatuor Modigliani” (Amaury Coeytaux and Loic Rio, violin; Laurent Marfaing, viola; and François Kieffer, cello) has earned a place among the world’s finest chamber music ensembles. Only one year after the group was formed, the quartet attracted international attention in 2004 by winning the Frits Philips String Quartet competition in Eindhoven, followed closely by first prize honors at the Vittorio Rimbotti competition in Florence in 2005, and the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York in 2006. In 2014, the quartet’s members became artistic directors of the Rencontres Musicales d’Evian. Today the quartet is a regular guest at the world’s top venues, including London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Philharmonie de Paris, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Berlin’s Konzerthaus, and Tokyo’s Oji Hall. The current season will take the group on tour throughout the United States, Korea, and Europe.

The quartet has recorded for the Mirare label since 2008 and has released seven award winning CDs, all to international critical acclaim. Their new recording of Schumann quartets is soon to be released.

Even the quartet’s instruments are extraordinary. Thanks to the generosity and support of private sponsors, the artists perform on four outstanding Italian instruments: Amaury Coeytaux plays a 1773 violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini; Loïc Rio plays a 1780 violin also by Guadagnini; Laurent Marfaing plays a 1660 viola by Luigi Mariani; and François Kieffer plays a 1706 cello by Matteo Goffriller (former “Warburg”).

“The Modigliani quartet clearly belongs to the world’s greatest”—Le Monde

“The Modigliani is not the kind of quartet, common today, that lures the listener into a bath of warm, sumptuous string tone, or that dazzles with pyrotechnics. Instead it plays with a Gallic cool, supported by a solid, thoroughly unified technique.”—The New York Times
