Pianist Cédric Tiberghien Presents an Armistice Celebration December 5

November 15, 2018

Concert at Middlebury College to Include Works from Each Year of WWI

Middlebury, VT—On Wednesday, December 5, acclaimed French pianist Cédric Tiberghien will give a grand performance honoring the 100th anniversary of the 1918 World War I Armistice. His concert program will feature works composed during every year of the war, by composers from Poland (Szymanowski), Russia (Scriabin), Germany (Hindemith), France (Debussy), and England (Bridge), including an extraordinary work for left hand written for a pianist who lost his arm in battle.

“…Cédric Tiberghien created something both arresting and significant. Choosing works composed in each year of the conflict, he built up a picture of piano music at this pivotal moment in its development, and also indicated something of the war’s human consequences.”—The Independent

Performing Arts Series Director Allison Coyne Carroll was planning the 100th anniversary of the series when she got a call that Tiberghien was offering this special program. “I’ve been looking for an opportunity to bring Cédric back to Middlebury after a decade’s absence…This is a dream concert, and one I know we will long remember in Cédric’s exceptional hands.”

He has been particularly applauded for his versatility, as demonstrated by wide-ranging repertoire, interesting programming, and dynamic chamber music partnerships. Tiberghien has a particularly strong relationship with Wigmore Hall in London, where he will perform five times this season. His passion for chamber music is reflected in numerous recordings—his discography with Ibragimova includes complete cycles of music by Schubert, Szymanowski, and Mozart (Hyperion) and a Beethoven Sonata cycle (Wigmore Live). Tiberghien has been awarded four Diapason d’Or awards for his solo recordings on the Hyperion label.
