Need-Based Financial Aid: Summer Language Immersion: Beginner Thru Advanced Levels

 Thanks to the support of generous donors (including many Language Schools alumni) and Middlebury’s commitment to provide an opportunity for as many students as possible to attend our programs, we are pleased to offer need-based financial aid.

 Middlebury also offers a number of merit-based fellowships and scholarships for the summer Language Schools. Please refer to the links on the right-hand side of this page.

 What need-based financial aid is available?

Our need-based financial aid is awarded in the form of grants, not loans. This means that if you qualify, you will attend the Language Schools at a reduced cost.

 In general, we are only able to offer partial need-based grants. A partial grant means you will typically be responsible for a significant portion of the cost to attend. You will also be responsible for travel to and from the program, books, and personal expenses

 How much can you qualify for?

Partial need-based grants are based on your demonstrated financial need as assessed by Middlebury’s Student Financial Services.

 If you will need financial aid to attend the program, please consult the Dates & Fees page of your Language School to learn more about the range of grants available for your program. It will show the minimum and maximum need-based grants for the program. The student is responsible for paying the remaining cost.

 Does need-based financial aid run out?

Yes. Unfortunately, need-based aid is limited. Aid awards are offered on a “first come, first served” basis.

 If you need financial aid to attend, you are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Our application opens on October 15 each year. By applying early, you give yourself the best chance of being considered for an aid award. If you apply later, you may be added to a waitlist for financial aid, and not all applicants can be considered once aid has run out. 

Who is eligible?

All Language Schools applicants are eligible to apply for need-based financial aid. This includes non-Middlebury students and non-U.S. citizens.

 A FAFSA is not needed to apply for need-based financial aid grants.

 How do I apply?

First, you must submit a complete Middlebury Language School application.

 After you have submitted your Language School application, you will then receive an email with a linkto the financial aid application. Please apply as soon as possible, as funds tend to run out quickly. Supplemental forms, if required, should likewise be submitted as soon as possible. Do *not* wait for an admissions decision.

 You will receive a confirmation email once you have submitted your financial aid application. Please save it for your records.

 After I submit my financial aid application, what happens next?   

Please note, you cannot be considered for need-based aid unless and until you have been accepted to the Language Schools. Please consult our deadlines page for more information on when you will receive a decision on your application decision.

Once a student has been accepted to the Language Schools, their financial aid application is reviewed by Middlebury Student Financial Services to determine if additional information is necessary. Student Financial Services will contact the student by email if additional documentation is required.

When all necessary documentation has been received, the financial aid application is marked as complete. Complete files are then reviewed to assess demonstrated financial need.

This process may take several weeks or longer, depending on the volume of aid applications and availability of funding. We ask you please be patient.
When we have made a decision, we will ask you by email to log in to your applicant dashboard to view the decision. Instructions on how to log in to your student dashboard will be included in the email.

If an award is offered, what is the process to accept it?  

If you are offered a need-based grant, you must decide to accept or decline it within two weeks of the financial aid decision email.

 To accept your financial aid grant, you must submit your non-refundable enrollment deposit ($250.00 for the Mills campus, $400.00 for the Middlebury campus). To do so, while in the student dashboard, select “Reply to offer”, “Accept Offer” and pay your deposit. At the same time, you will need to complete your Enrollment form. To decline your grant, select “Reply to offer”, then select “Decline Offer.”

 Please note: if your deposit is not received within two weeks, your financial aid award will be subject to cancellation and awarded to the next student or students in line. Given this two-week deadline, it is crucial to watch your email for a financial aid decision and respond promptly.
