Start-of-Year Events

There are a number of events to mark the start of the academic year.

  • Annual Teaching and Writing Retreat:  This retreat, sponsored by the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research and the Writing & Rhetoric Program, will be held on Monday, August 19 and Tuesday, August 20 at the Mountain Top Inn in Chittenden, Vt. This year’s retreat will focus on the theme, “From Scholarship to Pedagogy: Our Students, Our Culture, Our Learning Goals.” New faculty who have participated in past years have considered the retreat an essential way to receive feedback on syllabi and otherwise get ready for the semester.
  • The first faculty meeting of the year will be held on Friday, September 6, at the Bread Loaf Campus in Ripton, Vt. The Dean of the Faculty will introduce the new faculty at this meeting, which is a great opportunity to meet your colleagues. The plenary business meeting will be followed by small-group discussions of a topic of interest. The meeting ends with lunch at the Bread Loaf Inn. More information will be circulated closer to the date of the meeting.
  • Convocation, which is the official welcome to incoming first-year students and the official start of the new academic year, will be held on Sunday, September 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Mead Chapel. You should have received information about renting regalia in June. If not, please contact the College Bookstore at 802.443.5334.
  • Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 9!
