Major Advising Checklist: Environmental Studies—Chemistry

Automatic Joint Major:  ESCH-CHEM

All ESCH-CHEM majors should use this form as they plan out the timing of their major coursework.

I. Core Courses

These four courses must be completed by the end of the junior year.

(GEOG 0320 Geographic Information Systems can be used by the students of the class of 2013 and prior)

II. Cognate Courses: Humanities or Social Sciences from Approved List

Students doing environmental science foci need to take two cognates outside of the natural sciences.

III. Focus:
Course 2: CHEM 104 or CHEM 107
Courses 7 or 7-8: Research

At least one semester of formal research focusing on chemistry and the environment chosen from: ENVS 0360, independent study (ENVS or CHEM 0500), or the senior thesis sequence (CHEM 0400/0700 or ENVS 0500/0700).

Note: Students wishing to pursue graduate study in environmental chemistry are advised to take additional courses, in the appropriate field of science, and should consult with their advisor

IV. Senior Experience

Students must have completed all four core courses before they can enroll in ES 401.

V. Off-campus course substitutions (if applicable)

For students studying off-campus, a total of up to three courses may count toward the major. Courses for the focus need approval from the advisor. Courses for cognates need approval from the director in consultation with other appropriate faculty members.
