Kat Hartley '10 (minor in JAPN) won a Sustainable Study Abroad grant to work on an organic family farm in Japan during the summer after her junior year in Tokyo. The organic farm Doronkomura is run by Chimie Watanabe and Hiroshi Ogasawara on the Atsumi Peninsula, Aichi Prefecture. Kat helped with planting winter crops and with the goats and chickens. She got hands-on experience in all aspects of the farm. Doronkomura sells chiffon cake made from their own organic eggs and goats milk and hosts "Nogyou Taiken" personal experience camps for anyone who wanted to see what farming is all about.
