To assist families in this decision, the Student Financial Services Office has compiled lists of lenders whom we consider excellent in the educational lending field. Please note that you are not required to use one of these lenders. The Student Financial Services Office will process your loan with any lender you choose.  Choosing a lender other than those suggested by Middlebury will not cause unnecessary certification delays.

Middlebury College's suggested lender lists were developed with the sole purpose to service our students by providing loan programs with the student's best interest in mind. The lenders on the suggested lender lists provide excellent borrower benefits that are both quantifiable and obtainable.

Middlebury College considered several factors when constructing our lender lists; we have highlighted some of the factors below:

      • Loan programs that offer reduced fees and superior borrower benefits to the student
      • Timely and responsive processing with excellent problem-resolution service
      • Commitment to debt management and default aversion
      • The lender's mission statement
      • Ease of application process
      • Proactive customer communication
      • Source and stability of capital used in providing loans

While Middlebury College has identified lenders that will constitute suggested lender lists, Middlebury Student Financial Services Office strongly encourages all students to research various loan programs and benefits associated with each regardless if they are on the suggested lender lists. All Middlebury students have the right and ability to select any lender of their choosing.

The suggested lenders were selected as a result of a comprehensive analysis of regional and national lenders conducted in 2008.  The Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Student Financial Services, and members of the Student Financial Services management team met to determine which lenders offered the best overall comprehensive package of educational financing products that would benefit our students. The committee paid particular attention to certain criteria including competitive rates and terms, supportive customer service (such as call response time), and a flexible application and fund disbursement process. Lender options will be reviewed on an annual basis.

Middlebury College does not participate in revenue sharing and does not receive any compensation for listing the suggested lenders.
