ROBERT CLAGETT, Dean of Admissions, came to Middlebury from Harvard where he served as senior Admissions officer and associate director of Financial Aid. Bob is not the first member of his family to arrive at Middlebury, though: his daughter Kathryn entered several years earlier in the class of '06.
Listen to Dean Clagett talk about the admissions process.

CAITLIN BROME ’06 is originally from Jamestown, Rhode Island, and although she loves driving her Subaru and showing off her Vermont license, she misses the ocean just a little. As a Middlebury student, she studied History of Art and Architecture, following a Pre-Architecture track that even most students forget exists. She minored in Italian and still revels in sneaking back into language lunch tables every once in a while to get some practice. In her downtime, Caitlin adores snowboarding and can probably be roped into pretty much anything involving the outdoors and fun. Lucky for her those are prevalent here in the Green Mountains.
CAROL BUSHEY joined the admissions office in 1991. Prior to joining admissions, she worked in operations for nine years. Carol is the Operations Manager and manager of the tour guides. She lives in a quiet country setting with her husband. She has three children who have all graduated from college and moved out of state. During her spare time she enjoys reading, quilting, gardening, biking, roller-blading, and boating.
MANUEL CARBALLO joined the admissions office in 2005. Prior to his arrival in the Green Mountain State, he served as a secondary school principal in Texas and Costa Rica. Manuel calls Costa Rica home but if he can brave a Vermont winter, anyone else can. He graduated from a small liberal arts college in 1998, where he majored in economics and also did admissions work. Although you can usually find him in front of his computer, he plans to "try out" all the new winter sports for the first time this year. He lives with his wife, Brook, a graduate of the Middlebury School in Spain, and Calcetines, her loveable, crazy cat.
VALERIE DEMONG joined the admissions staff in 1990 and laments that she didn't come to this work sooner, as the personal interaction with prospective students is just her cup of tea - or mulled cider! Val and husband Geoff were Middlebury class of 1966, and after graduate work at RISD and UVM respectively, returned to Addison County. Here they put down roots, literally and figuratively, when they joined the argicultural community and planted their apple orchard in Shoreham which they farmed until just last year and where their two daughters grew up. Over the years Val served as Justice of the Peace, performing dozens of weddings and Civil Unions, and she also chaired the Shoreham Selectboard from 1993-2003. She's a graduate of the Vermont Leadership Institute and serves on the statewide board of the Preservation Trust of Vermont which is committed to helping Vermont maintain the beauty of its landscape, classic architecture, and the vital small-town communities that define our special state.
BROOK ESCOBEDO grew up in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from a larger university in Texas with a degree in Spanish and environmental studies, and working in the admissions office, she attended Middlebury's language school and graduated with a master's in Spanish. Although she will forever be a Spurs fan and misses Tex-Mex food, she appreciates Vermont for its natural beauty, green spaces, and environmental consciousness. After purchasing a "real" winter coat, she can successfully make it around the cross country ski trail without falling too much and knows most of the rules in ice hockey. She lives in Middlebury with her husband, Manuel, and their cat, Cal.
CHRISSY FULTON '08 did not get enough of the Middlebury life in her four years as a student and has signed on to experience a different side of the community. Originally from Concord, New Hampshire, she majored in English with a creative writing focus while also minoring in Psychology and American History. While at Middlebury, she tried to keep her days filled to the brim, working as a writing tutor, interning for the New England Review, living on a first year hall as a Junior Counselor, and running on the cross country and track teams. In her spare time, she loves to explore all the trails Vermont has to offer and read every book she can get her hands on.
BARBARA MARLOW is a former high school math teacher who came to Middlebury in 1980 via Michigan and Colorado. She is not a Middlebury graduate, but is married to an alum with enough enthusiasm for two, at least: Hugh Marlow '57, executive secretary of the Middlebury Alumni Association. Graduating from a school of 45,000, Barbara brings another perspective to our office. She bikes, runs, roller blades, skis, plays tennis, and plays defense on a local women's ice hockey team. Two dogs and a daughter, who graduated from Middlebury in 2001, keep things lively, as do three grown stepsons (one of whom graduated from Middlebury in 1994).
MICHELLE McKENZIE NELSON joined the admissions office in 1999, returning to the northeast after a 5-year stint in Seattle, Washington. While living in Seattle, Michelle worked in the sporting goods and outdoor recreation industries. She has enjoyed hiking, skiing and fly fishing across the Pacific Northwest and is now pursuing these hobbies in the Green Mountains of Vermont. In her free time, Michelle also plays ice hockey and volunteers as an assistant coach with the Middlebury women's softball team. Michelle originally hails from Guilford, Connecticut, and was a 1994 graduate of another small, rural liberal arts college where she was a psychology major and field hockey player.
SHANNON (DETWEILER) NGUYEN '95 has worked in the admissions office since the fall of 1999. After graduating from Middlebury as an art history major, she spent time in her hometown of San Diego and worked in the museum administration and human resources/recruiting fields. Shannon and her husband Hieu (Middlebury '92) enjoy the quality of live that Vermont offers and are happy to be a part of the College community. These days both are on the run keeping up with their active children, Sydney and Holden.
JOHN NORDMEYER joined the admissions staff as Manager of Admission Information Systems in 2008 after working as Tech Lead here at Middlebury for 7 years. He is an English major from Grinnell College and is a living example of a how a liberal arts education can prepare one for a job that nobody had heard of at graduation. When he is not pouring over admissions data he can be found working in his garden or spending time with his wife and three daughters. He is the technical director for a local theater company and has acted in numerous productions.
CAROLYN PERINE '73 followed Middlebury tradition in pursuing a variety of interests in college, studying math and Russian as well as completing her major in religion. Known as the woman who never stands still, Carolyn enjoys life to the fullest with interests in community events, videography, travel and outdoor activities. During this past decade, she has spent a disproportionate amount of her time visiting other admissions offices on other college campus with each of her four children And in case you're wondering, no, the college application process is no easier to navigate if you're an admissions professional!
BERT PHINNEY '73 has Middlebury in his blood - he is the eighth member of his family to have attended since the 1800's (followed by number nine who graduated in '05). Bert is the office golfer and holds claim to the college's golf course record and two hole-in-ones (although he was playing alone for the first one!). Perhaps golf is the reason Bert prefers travels to the South and the West for the Admissions Office. His traveling adventures have included the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, hurricanes Hugo, Andrew and Michelle, and the Malibu fires. (Is it any wonder why others are reluctant to travel with him?)
RACHEL ROSENFELD ’07 happily joins the admissions crew at Middlebury College. Rachel, originally from St. Louis, Missouri, majored in International Studies with a focus on Russian and East European Studies and Religion. She spent her junior year at the Middlebury Schools in Russia and thus is fortunate enough to say that she lived in Siberia. One of the most exciting aspects of Rachel’s Middlebury experience was holding interviews along the trans-Siberian railroad with a Rohatyn Center for International Affairs travel research grant. She really values the integration of study abroad experiences with work on-campus. While in Vermont, Rachel helps organize Middlebury’s Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society, and she loves Vermont’s natural beauty and outdoor activities.
JENNY SCHNEIDER joins the admissions staff as a recent Middlebury graduate hailing from Colorado. When she first arrived in Vermont she missed the Rockies, but as time passed, the humble beauty of the Green Mountains grew on her until it felt like home. During her time at Middlebury, she majored in English and was perhaps most well known for songwriting and performing music alone and collaboratively around campus. Aside from her musical identity on campus, she also organized a service project entitled Knit for the Need during the winter of 2006. The program was designed to bring community members and Middlebury students together to knit warm garments for children from low-income families in Addison County. In her spare time she continues to perform, as well as to read and enjoy the outdoors.
