Application Instructions for Current Middlebury Undergraduate Students

Deadline: Admissions are rolling, but if you are applying to the summer program followed by the academic year abroad, you must submit your application by May 1 (for Germany, the deadline is April 15). Applicants for the year abroad must also have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the end date of the program.

Scholarships, fellowships, and some financial aid programs do have a deadline by which applications must be complete. Please refer to the Language Schools Financial Aid page for details.

1. Online Application with additional information.

You will be asked to answer the following questions in 200 words total, in English:

  • your formal and informal experience with the language, including travel, study, or residence abroad;
  • how you learned about Middlebury's programs;
  • your reasons for wanting to study the language you have chosen;
  • your career goals;
  • any additional information that you consider relevant to your application.
2. Transcript(s)

Your Language School coordinator will obtain a transcript for your studies at Middlebury College. If you have studied elsewhere, please have an official transcript sent to your School's office.

3. Recommendations

Applicants to the graduate program must submit three letters of recommendation through the online application.

The following recommenders are all acceptable, listed here in order of preference:

  • language instructors with whom you have studied the target language (from the past two years);
  • recent instructors with whom you have studied other languages or disciplines;
  • work supervisors from professional or volunteer work, or colleagues

Letters contained in official college placement files are acceptable, provided that they are no more than two years old.
