All students accepted to the graduate program in German begin the degree during an initial summer of candidacy on the Vermont campus.

Locations

After successfully completing the initial summer MA program in Vermont, students may choose to continue with summer sessions in Middlebury, Vermont, or spend an academic year in Germany (Mainz or Potsdam).

Course Requirements

Twelve units of credit, minimum grade in each course is B-. One unit equals three semester hours.

Flexible Timeframe

Students have ten years to complete the MA degree. All credits toward a Middlebury MA (earned at Middlebury or as transfer credits) expire ten years after the study was completed. For example, courses taken during the summer of 2020 will no longer be valid toward a Middlebury degree as of August 2030.

Course Options

Course offerings vary by location. For a complete list of courses, please see Vermont courses and Germany courses in either Mainz or Potsdam.

Transfer Credit

After the summer of candidacy, students may transfer in up to three units of credit to complete the required remaining nine units of credit. This requires preapproval from the German School director. This option excludes the Applied Languages degree.

Students may not transfer in their last three courses since they must be in residence to present their paper.

Internships

The Middlebury School in Germany offers Graduate students the opportunity to gather valuable job-experience in their field of interest in their second semester abroad. We will support students with drafting application materials and preparing for their interviews. For the MA program, if academic requirements can be fulfilled, an internship can earn a credit and replace a mainstream course. The internship is required for the MA in Applied Languages.
